Gina O'Connor

Research is converging around the basic principles associated with successful development of this important organizational expertise. Professor Gina O’Connor will share the results of a 25 year research program, and introduce a set of 8 tenets that enable organizations to develop and sustain a sustainable capability for strategic innovation.

Innovation Accounting: Ask Us Anything

Esther Gons and Dan Toma, hosted by Hannah Keartland

Co-authors of The Corporate Startup and Innovation Accounting

Click for session details

In Victorian times there was tremendous opposition to the introduction of the railways. Landowners, existing transport companies and members of the public all signalled their distrust of this new way of travel. So much so that noted British Architect George Godwin, appealed to the public not to repeat the mistakes of the past. That his appeal was heard is testament to the growth of the railways.

Nevertheless the level of opposition demonstrates only too well the way in which successful innovations are those which resonate with individuals and society. One opponent even commented upon seeing a railway engine for the first time "That was a sight to have seen; but one I never care to see again! How much longer shall knowledge be allowed to go on increasing?”

Nearly two hundred years further on and knowledge is still increasing. But despite all of those advances are we still in danger of repeating the mistakes of the past? Has our delight in pushing the boundaries of technology been somewhat one dimensional, leaving other areas of business floundering in its wake? In particular, are we blindly applying old thinking to how innovation is measured, monitored and accounted for? And are we therefore in the process stifling true potential to make lasting change?

Perhaps it is time to look again at how we view and account for innovation in business. Join this AMA to ask Dan and Esther anything about Innovation Accounting.

Dan Toma is the co-author of The Corporate Startup and the Innovation Accounting book, as well as co-creator of AIM, the assessment tool for Innovation Maturity. He started his career in entrepreneurship, being involved with technology startups across the world. Puzzled by the questions ‘why are innovative products mainly launched by startups?’, he dedicated himself to enterprise innovation strategy – specifically on the changes blue-chip organizations need to make to allow for new ventures to be built in a corporate setting.

In this capacity he worked with companies like Deutsche Telekom, Bosch, Jaguar Land Rover, Bayer, John Deere or Allianz. With multiple corporate wide transformations under his belt, Dan possess the right skill-set to move companies beyond innovation theatrics.

Esther Gons is the co-author of The Corporate Startup and the Innovation Accounting book, as well as the founder and CEO of GroundControl. GroundControl is innovation software to manage your innovation ecosystem. The platform focusses heavily on innovation accounting and helps corporate startup teams with the development of new business models. GroundControl works with clients such as Schiphol Group, DHL and ABN Amro.

Esther is an international speaker on topics of corporate innovation, innovation accounting, portfolio management, and startups. She has been an entrepreneur for over 20 years and mentored over several hundred startups so far, e.g. as investor at NEXT Startup Ventures, lead mentor in the Rockstart Accelerator programmes, and Lean Startup Machine weekends.

Downturns Are a Great Time to Grow – How to Survive, Reset, and Thrive

Rebecca Homkes

Teaching Fellow at the London Business School & Director Corporate Innovation at GrowthX

Click for session details

In times of unprecedented change and extreme uncertainty, organizations must take action, but traditional responses will be less effective. As an innovation leader, you may be concerned about what the crisis and subsequent downturn means for your business. While understood, entrepreneurial leaders must remember that downturns can be a great time to grow. Anyone can grow a company when markets are booming, cash is free flowing, and everything is going up. When the froth clears, only those with true strategic insight prevail.

  • Survive: Stabilize your business not just with the basics but through utilising repurposing and partnering, building employee engagement, communicating clearly, and accelerating learning velocity
  • Reset: Revisit your existing strategic plan and reset this to take into account the new normal, including updating your critical beliefs which form your choices, setting a direction, building on your competitive advantage, and updating your strategic priorities
  • Thrive: Dramatically grow and prosper on the other inside including identifying and taking advantage of strategic insights through disciplined flexibility

The next few months will be tough, but as entrepreneurs we need to embrace the upcoming opportunities and grow through and on the other side of the downturn.

Dr. Rebecca Homkes is a high-growth strategy specialist who serves as a Lecturer at the London Business School (LBS), a Director at the Strategic Management Centre (SMC) in London, and previous Fellow at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Economic Performance (CEP). A New Enterprise Growth System: Creating a Nexus of Strategy + Innovation + R&D

Steve Schwartz

Founding Partner at The Inovo Group

Click for session details

Most large corporate enterprises treat strategy, R&D, and innovation as separate and distinct functions – worthy of specialized teams, segmented funding, reporting structures and operational charters. This is starting to change. Many large enterprises are reimagining their system for creative transformation in a more holistic and integrated way.

The early signs of this change are becoming visible as large enterprises are evolving to create a system in which strategy, R&D and innovation all work together in harmony to drive the creative transformation outcomes of a company.

Steve Schwartz is one of the founding partners of The Inovo Group, a strategic innovation consulting firm. Steve is an engineer by training but an entrepreneur by nature. He has spent 30 years in various technology and commercialization roles and is passionate about how large organizations pursue transformational growth in a systematic way.

Financial Modeling: From Fuzzy Early Stage Project to Scaling Up

Tristan Kromer

Innovation Coach & Founder at Kromatic

Click for session details

How can we judge early stage projects without a business case? Customer empathy sounds great, but where are the numbers? How can I bet my business without market sizing?

Design thinking is great, but mapping empathy into a spreadsheet is hard. Early stage entrepreneurs and the finance team need to work together to map qualitative data into concrete business cases. Even early stage projects can create simple, understandable financial models in as little as an hour.

Those models can serve to focus the type of experiments and research the team needs to do to prove out a good investment.

As a lean startup coach and founder of Kromatic, Tristan Kromer works with innovation teams and leaders to create amazing products and build startup ecosystems.

He has worked with companies from early stage startups with zero revenue to enterprise companies with >$1B USD revenue (Unilever, Swisscom, Salesforce, Fujitsu, LinkedIn). With his remaining hours, Tristan volunteers his time with early stage startups and blogs at GrasshopperHerder.com.

In a moment of crisis, it can be difficult to think beyond what is right in front of us. But reflection on our most important choices can help us emerge from periods of great change stronger, providing we ask the right questions: Who do we want to be when we emerge from this? What do we want our organization to stand for? What do we believe has changed for now, and what has changed forever – and what does all that mean for what we need to do?

These are questions of strategy—of what it means to win. In this session, Jennifer Riel will offer some thoughts on strategy, thinking for the long run and where design can help most.

Most organizations find that the innovation competency is low in their organization. Of course, it is a no brainer that almost all the leaders in these organizations want it to improve.

"For me, the Innov8rs unconference is one of the few intrapreneurship conferences that is worth paying for. The ability to connect with such a high quality speakers, ask questions, and get great insights is just invaluable!"

"The cost of the Unconference has far exceeded the value. I have already used some of the ideas presented. It is also influencing my thoughts on many other areas related to innovation."

"I understand how difficult these events are to run in the best of times. This is hands down the best virtual event I have attended."

"Wow, what have you created!? I am absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed by what I entered there yesterday. And hey, I'm only a basic member ...!"."
